Dear Fitness Anywhere Family,

A very brief outline of things happening at the studio this Spring that you don’t want to miss out on:

1) I’m very pleased to announce that we’re giving you an opportunity to share your experience with others, and fully reap the benefits of it with our Pay it Forward Promotion! For the month of May only, we’re giving you a $100 gift card, that you can use on whatever service you’d like at the studio (Personal Training, Group Training, Corporate Group Training, Online Nutrition, Online Video Training, gift giving etc.) for getting 3 new people to sign up for ANY of our services. I’ve attached a document that you can use to forward, to print and give, or to share on Facebook. It’s easy and amazing what a little nudge will do. I’ve also copied it below. 2) Announcing the addition of 7 am morning classes to the schedule. Yes! Taught by Mark and Andrew Tuesdays and Thursday mornings. Reserve as always.

3) Official email introductions to two great new trainers and a great new class at our studio. Mark Crossman will be leading groups of individuals looking to get fit through Eastern traditions that will whip you into shape. It’s called Muay Thai Conditioning and it’s on Tuesdays at noon and Wednesdays at 5pm. Come to get fit, or also great if you just need to hit something, HARD! Also, Jessica Magnan joins us as our Head Yoga instructor, and offers a great Power class on Fridays and Private Yoga instruction to help keep the muscles long and lean between workouts.

4) Save the date, Saturday September 21st we’ll be holding an intimate health and wellness workshop at the studio, with a variety of speakers from many different backgrounds such as alternative medicine and naturopathy, chiropractic and massage, holistic nutrition, cooking healthy, bio-signature assessments and the list goes on. Tickets will be limited for this event and on sale at the end of June.

Andrew Judson – Our Go-To-Guy for Nutrition

Exercise and Nutrition go hand and hand. That’s why we’re very pleased to welcome Andrew Judson as our elite expert in Nutrition. Andrew is a professional fitness model, trainer and nutritionist. He creates our clients customized meal plans and educates each individual about the importance of nutrient timing and eating for their specific body types and lifestyles. Rates are a very reasonable $359 +HST for 6 months of meal planning and $599 + HST for one year. He’ll help get you to your goals, be it for weight loss, sport performance, or simply to improve health and find energy for your busy lifestyle.

Try it for FREE and see!!! Boot Camp is the hottest way to get real, lasting results that you can see and feel! Long gone are the days of complicated, choreographed aerobics. A Fitness Anywhere Boot Camp is a minute-by-minute-intense-ab-sculpting-butt-burning-cardio-enhancing-sweat-dripping-ass-kicker…that never gets easier! Each minute of the class is different, and includes movements that use the entire body all at once. Anyone can participate! Each movement has variations for beginner, intermediate, and advanced! Everyone works at their own level.

How do we differ from other Boot Camps?

- Our instructors are creative and knowledgeable and can work around injuries and other obstacles that would inhibit results.
- We use equipment! Many Boot Camps in Ottawa are held outdoors only and instructors don’t have access to equipment. Not us! We use the newest hottest equipment, such as TRX suspension trainers, stability balls, weights…you name it, we got it!
- We offer an indoor option! So when others Boot Camps are canceling their classes due to storms and other bad weather, our groups head indoors in our air-conditioned studio which was designed specifically for group classes.
- We keep our classes SMALL to enable a better trainer/client ratio. This creates a safer more effective training atmosphere, where you can be monitored more closely for better results.

“…Tell me again why am I working my shoulders, when I want to lose fat off my tummy!!??”

At the early stages of creating a personalised program for any client eager to shed pounds, I ask several questions in an attempt to learn their specific goals for health, performance and appearance. In general, most people express that they want to lose weight off their mid sections and sometimes off the hips and thighs as well. For others, shrinking their rear or getting rid of their bingo arms are of the utmost importance. So when I was asked this week, “why am I working my shoulders, when I want to lose weight off my tummy?” I thought it the perfect opportunity to address the question here.

My answer was simple. Spot training problem areas will only get you so far. Unfortunately, you can’t pick and choose where you want to lose the weight. Genes and body type play a major role in where the weight comes off first, and often, the places where you wouldn’t mind keeping the fat are the first to go, such as on your face and cheeks, and often the breasts for women. However, with healthy, natural weight loss, body fat decreases in a rather uniform way throughout the body. With that being said, the focus shouldn’t be on fixing only the problem areas, but what has caused them in the first place, your metabolism! By working the large muscle groups of the body (quads, hamstrings, glutes, core, chest, back and shoulders) you are demanding that the body burn more calories during exercise and even during moments of rest too. When strengthening large muscle groups, these large areas of the body demand more energy for survival. Not only do large muscle groups consume more calories while working, but often require that you perform compound exercises to do them. Compound movements require motion in more than one joint, such as hips and knees simultaneously, or shoulders and elbows. This demands much more movement of the body and ultimately burns more calories in the long run. For example, if flabby arms are your weakness, a squat may be far more effective than a single-joint tricep kickback, even though the tricep movement is being performed directly where you have accumulated undesired fat. A squat burns more calories as it works the large muscles of the rear and legs. It also requires that two joints, the hips and knees, move simultaneously. In other words, working the big muscles in your legs and rear will actually trigger fat loss in your arms, perhaps faster than arm exercises alone, simply due to muscle size and the caloric needs of those working muscles.

So instead of obsessing over the trouble spots, work on increasing your metabolism overall and burning the maximum amount of calories possible in the amount of time you’ve allotted for exercise. Do this by focusing on the big muscles of the body.

Our spacious, yet intimate location in the heart of downtown Ottawa will provide our clients with 1600 square feet for personal, private training, with the latest equipment and the city’s best trainers.
